چکیده

Saliency is the ability of an image location to attract attention or detailed processing. A unique vertical bar among horizontal bars is said to be salient and pops out perceptually. Physiological data have suggested that mechanisms in the primary visual cortex (V1) contribute to the high saliency of such a unique basic feature, but indicated little regarding 1This chapter is adapted from Zhaoping L. The primary visual cortex creates a bottom-up saliency map

It has been proposed that the primary visual cortex (V1) creates a saliency map using autonomous intra-cortical mechanisms. This saliency of a visual location describes the location’s ability to attract attention without top-down factors. It increases monotonously with the firing rate of the most active V1 cell responding to that location. Given the prevalent feature selectivities of V1 cells (...

Psychophysical Tests of the Hypothesis of a Bottom-Up Saliency Map in Primary Visual Cortex

A unique vertical bar among horizontal bars is salient and pops out perceptually. Physiological data have suggested that mechanisms in the primary visual cortex (V1) contribute to the high saliency of such a unique basic feature, but indicated little regarding whether V1 plays an essential or peripheral role in input-driven or bottom-up saliency. Meanwhile, a biologically based V1 model has sug...

Predictive coding as a model of the V1 saliency map hypothesis

The predictive coding/biased competition (PC/BC) model is a specific implementation of the predictive coding theory that has previously been shown to provide a detailed account of the response properties of orientation tuned cells in primary visual cortex (V1). Here it is shown that the same model can successfully simulate psychophysical data relating to the saliency of unique items in search a...

Perceptual Learning of Pop-out and the Primary Visual Cortex

I propose that perceptual learning of tasks to detect targets among uniform background items involves changing intra-cortical interactions in the primary visual cortex (V1). This is the case for tasks that rely mainly on bottom-up saliency to guide attention to the task relevant locations quickly, and rely less on top-down knowledge of the stimuli or on other strategies. In particular, suppress...
